En 1960, le photographe William Claxton et le fameux musicologue allemand Joachim Berendt parcoururent les Etats - Unis à la rencontre du jazz. Ce faisant, ils produisirent de merveilleux clichés et enregistrements d'artistes de jazz légendaires comme de musiciens de rue inconnus. Le livre qui parut à l'époque, Jazzlife, est aujourd'hui une pièce de collection âprement convoitée par les amateurs de photographie et de jazz. En 2003, Taschen commença à rassembler cet imposant matériau ainsi que des photos en couleurs inconnues jusqu'alors et les réunit dans un ouvrage actualisé, enrichi d'une préface détaillée de William Claxton dans laquelle il parle de ses voyages avec Berendt et de son amour pour le jazz.
